Rater agreement index

The Barthel Index (BI) is a 10-item measure of activities of daily living which is frequently used in clinical practice and as a trial outcome measure in stroke. We sought to describe the reliability (interobserver variability) of standard BI in stroke cohorts using systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies. Introduction Much neglected, raw agreement indices are important descriptive statistics. They have unique common-sense value. A study that reports only simple agreement rates can be very useful; a study that omits them but reports complex statistics may fail to inform readers at a practical level. Reliability (inter-rater agreement) of the Barthel Index for assessment of stroke survivors: systematic review and meta-analysis. Duffy L(1), Gajree S, Langhorne P, Stott DJ, Quinn TJ. Author information: (1)Department of Academic Geriatric Medicine, Walton Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, G4 0SF United Kingdom. Step 4 Compute the total number of agreements by summing the values in the diagonal cells of the table. Σa = 9 + 8 + 6 = 23 Based on this, the % agreement would be 23/36 = 64%. However, this value is an inflated index of agreement, because it does not take into account the agreements that would have agreed by chance. The intraclass correlation coefficient is an index of the reliability of the ratings for a typical, single judge. We employ it when we are going to collect most of our data using only one judge at a time, but we have used two or (preferably) more judges on a subset of the data for purposes of estimating inter-rater reliability. They each recorded their scores for variables 1 through 10. To obtain percent agreement, the researcher subtracted Susan’s scores from Mark’s scores, and counted the number of zeros that resulted. Dividing the number of zeros by the number of variables provides a measure of agreement between the raters. In Table 1, the agreement is 80%. This means that 20% of the data collected in the study is erroneous because only one of the raters can be correct when there is disagreement.

This Index of Rater Agreement ranges from 0 to 1.0 and is based on a statistical measure of dispersion or “spread” by raters called standard deviation (this index is derived by subtracting 1 from the calculated standard deviation divided by a scale-specific divisor).

In statistics, inter-rater reliability is the degree of agreement among raters. It is a score of how much homogeneity or consensus exists in the ratings given by various judges. In contrast, intra-rater reliability is a score of the consistency in ratings given by the same person across multiple instances. Inter-rater and intra-rater reliability are aspects of test validity. Assessments of them are useful in refining the tools given to human judges, for example, by determining if a particular sc The basic measure for inter-rater reliability is a percent agreement between raters. In this competition, judges agreed on 3 out of 5 scores. Percent agreement is 3/5 = 60%. (a) Rater Agreement Ratio. Define rater agreement as the ratio of the total number of attributes selected by the raters (counting each time an attribute is chosen, whether or not the attribute is chosen by multiple raters) to the total number of unique attributes selected (counting each chosen attribute once, no matter how many raters chose that attribute)
