Sort by. best. Despawn is a term used for the game mechanic involved when a mob, a dropped item or another unplaced object disappears after a particular amount of time, during a certain time of day, or in a particular situation. Despawning is different from when a mob dies, as the mob will not drop any items or materials when it disappears. The main difference is actually that alpacas have very soft wool, and llamas have a slightly harder wool. We made llamas more beasts of burden, so you can put chests on them and they can form caravans when you pull them. We wanted to make sure you could swag them out, so you can put a carpet on them and they will get these nice costumes. The Traveling Merchant is a unique NPC vendor who randomly visits the player's town for one day. His inventory is randomized and different every visit, selling 4–10 / 4–11 (average 5.47 / 5.97; see below for details) different items listed below. In order for the Traveling Merchant to spawn, at least 2 other NPCs must already be present. A llama is a neutral mob. The term mob is short for mobile and is used to refer to all living, moving creatures in the game such as chickens, creepers, and llamas. Because a llama is a neutral mob, it will only attack you in Survival mode if you attack the llama first. It will never attack you in Creative mode.
These llamas spawn in groups of 1 or 2, wearing decorations similar to what the wandering trader wears, and will be leashed to the wandering trader at its outpost. They will attack any nearby illagers, zombies (including zombie pigmen, and any other zombie variants), but will not attack ravagers.
4 Feb 2019 Not resolved in 1.14 release as far as I can tell. The wandering trader disappears, but the llamas stay. I've been running a 1.14 server for about 7 Apr 2019 When the wandering trader despawns, there is a chance that the llamas won't despawn with him. Wandering trader spawning and despawning improvements. Wandering traders spawning can be a bit weird or annoying at times. They can spawn pretty much anywhere any time they want. I think this should be more polished, and changed to make more sense. - They should mostly spawn on natural blocks like grass, stone, dirt, etc. The only Wandering Trader I found didn't have llamas. I wonder if they somehow broke lose or if they're dead. Every Llama I try to put in a fenced pen, despawns after I walk away from it. Doesn't matter if the Llama is tamed or wild. Had them in the same sized pens as my cows and sheep with it two fences high, even the gates are doubled. They are not just escaping (I have checked).

After the time expires, the wandering trader will despawn. They will despawn even if they are named with a name tag or put in a vehicle such as a minecart or a boat. A wandering trader will despawn sooner if all trades have been locked. The trader may later respawn with new trades. You can trade with the wandering trade. Also, if you kill the wandering trader, you can tame and ride his trader llamas, just like you can with regular llamas. If you are having trouble finding a wandering trader, you can summon a wandering trader using a cheat or you can use a spawn egg. Weapon. A wandering trader does not carry a weapon. Attack Method
On Java yes, you can tame them and they won’t despawn. They don’t seem to despawn even if not tamed but I think that’s a bug.
